MILLENIUM OF YAROSLAVL

THE CITY OF THE WISE KING CELEBRATES 1000-YEARS

In 2010 Yaroslavl, one of the the most beautiful ancient Russian cities of the Golden Ring, will celebrate its millennial anniversary. The city, located 250 kilometers north-east of Moscow, on Volga River, was founded by the Grand Prince of Kiev, Yaroslav the Wise in then the remote borderland of the Rus' (first Russian state) and ever since bears his name. From 1218 it became the capital of the independent principality and by 1463 was incorporated into Moscow state. By XVII century Yaroslavl had become the second largest city in Russia after Moscow. During the Polish occupation of Moscow in 1612 Yaroslavl was the country's de facto capital and the headquarters of the patriotic liberation force that restored the order and unity of the country. At the end of XVIII century the first Russian teatre was established in Yaroslavl. Nowadays the city is an important administrative and industrial centre, the largest among the Golden Ring cities.

In the streets of Yaroslavl you can see the history of the Russian architecture of the last 5 centuries, with dozens of churches and cathedrals featuring multiple domes of various color and design. In the heart of the city, on the shore of Kotorosl River (tributary of Volga) lays the most ancient building the Transfiguration of the Saviour Cathedral of the Spassky (St Saviour) Monastery constructed in 1506-1516 on the foundations of the original edifice dating back to 1216-1224. From this monastery the army of volunteers led by a merchant Minin and Prince Pozharsky set out to liberate Moscow from Polish invaders.

The high embankment of Volga River is very popular among the locals and tourists and turns into promenade in the sunny days. Dotted with the domes of the churches and monasteries the opposite bank provides an exellent view. Yaroslavl is a popular stop for the cruise boats going up and down of Volga. The downtown area in the summer is full of open air cafes, street artists and small souvenir markets. The night life is good for the city of this size and there is a circus. Yaroslavl is a good place to buy traditional Russian hancrafts, including matryoshkas (the wooden dolls) and lacquered boxes. Yaroslavl makes an excellent access point to the other cities of the Golden Ring, connected to it by the common history and culture.
