FOLLOWING THE PATH OF THE GREAT SCIENTIST
THREE HUNDRED YEAR'S JUBELEE OF LOMONOSOV The first half of XVIII century gave Russia many outstanding personalities. One of them was Mikhail Lomonosov, the first Russian scientist of the world class. He was truly a Renaissance kind of person who made important contributions to literature, education, and science. His spheres of interest were natural science, astronomy, chemistry, physics, mineralogy, history, art, philology, optical devices and other. Lomonosov was also a poet, who laid the foundation of the modern Russian language. He was the first astronomer to discover the atmosphere of Venus. He was also the founder of Moscow University and regarded as the father of the Russian science.
The would be scientist was born in a village of remote Northern province of Arkhangelsk in a peasant family. Aged 19, Lomonosov joined a trading caravan travelling to Moscow in the year 1730. Pretending to be a priest's son, Lomonosov managed to enroll Slavic Greek Latin Academy. Then followed years of meticulous studying in Russia and abroad, including Marburg in Germany where he learned philosophy, chemistry and German language and literature . The scientist's living conditions where sometimes quite hard those years. Upon his return to Russia in 1741, Lomonosov continued to study physics at the Russian Academy of Science and also became professor of chemistry. In 1755 Lomonosov, together with Count Ivan Shuvalov established Moscow University. Lomonosov was the first person to record the freezing of mercury and to discover the existence of an atmosphere on Venus. He predicted the existence of Antarctica and got close to the theory of continental drift. Among his scientific achievements was the idea that heat as a form of motion, introduction of wave theory of light, contribution to the formulation of the kinetic theory of gases, concept of conservation of matter, numerous works on mineralogy. Lomonosov's experiments in chemistry led him to restoration of the ancient art of mosaics. In 1763, he established a stained glass factory that produced the first mosaics outside of Italy reviving the centuries old craft. In 1755, he wrote a grammar that reformed the Russian literary language by combining Old Church Slavonic with the vernacular tongue, therefore becoming the founder of the modern Russian literary language.
There are very few people in the Russian history who's contribution to the science and culture would be as various and profound as Lomonosov's. He was one of those, who's real genius influences many spheres of culture and life. The program of the tour: 10 Days/ 9 Nights | Day 1 | Arrival to Moscow, transfer to the hotel. | Day 2 | Guided tour of Moscow including places connected to life of Lomonosov. We visit Sparrow Hills with the new buildning of Moscow University (founded by Lomonosov) and a superb panorama of Moscow. In the afternoon we see Museum of Applied Arts where special jubilee exhibition of Lomonosov is held. | Day 3 | Tour of the Kremlin and its cathedrals. In the afternoon we visit high school N1530, bearing the name of Lomonosov and teaching according to his pedagogical principles. There is an excellent museum dedicated to the scientist at the school. | Day 4 | After the breakfast transfer to the airport taking a flight to Arkhangelsk arriving at 11:30am. Transfer to the hotel. City tour representing the four hundred years of the history of Arkhangelsk and places connected to the life of Lomonosov. Arkhangelsk is an old city that perfectly represents the unique culture of the Russia's North-West (the area called Pomorye) full of charming old wooden buildings. After the lunch we visit exhibition 'History and culture of the Russian Pomorye XVI-XVII centuries'. The exhibition is situated in the old restored marketplace of Arkhangelsk and dedicated to the time when Pomorye was one of the most dynamically developing regions of Russia. There are special rooms dedicated to Lomonosov, opened for the jubilee. In the afternoon walking guided tour of Arkhangelsk dedicated to the wooden and stone architecture of XIX-XX centuries. We visit museum 'The old mansion at the embankment', old quarters of Arkhangelsk. In one of the mansions we take part in the master class of traditional hancrafts (birch bark utensils, clay toys, bone carving. Dinner. | | Day 5 | After the breakfast we visit the birth place of the scientist village Kholmogory and the village where he had spent his formative years that bears his name nowadays. There is a big museum of the scientist there. Lunch in Kholmogory. After the lunch going back to Arkhangelsk via Novodvinsk. In Novodvinsk we can see the Museum of the Church and Folk Art of XVI-XVIII centuries. Dinner. | Day 6 | After the breakfast a guided tour to Wooden Architecture Museum. In this great open air museum the best surviving examples of the wooden buildings of the Arkhangelsk province are preserved. Lunch. Transfer to the airport. Taking flight to St.Petersburg. Arrival. Transfer to the hotel. Dinner. | Day 7 | Guided tour of the city, visiting Peter and Paul fortress, where Lomonosov conducted his experiments and other places connected to the life of the scientist (his chemical laboratory, house where he lived, St.Petersburg University and memorial of Lomonosov, Academy of Science where in the interior we still can see the mosaics pictures made by Lomonosov. In the afternoon Kuntskamera museum with the original observatory of Lomonosov with his giant globe, then visiting his parish church and another one where he was accepted to Academy of Science. Dinner. | Day 8 | Tour of Peterhof and Pushkin - the famous royal suburbs of St.Petersburg with beautiful parks and palaces that Lomonosov had frequented and admired. | |
| Day 9 | Visit of the world renown Hermitage Museum, in the afternoon Alexander Nevsky's Lavra - monastery where Lomonosov was buried among many other famous Russians. | Day 10 | Transfer to the airport. Departure. |
