Pushkin House resumes its activities in London29.12.2006 |
The new Russian cultural centre Pushkin House was officially opened in London on Wednesday, November 22. The centre is housed in an historical early 18th century building (it was in this building that the British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli was born) located in Bloomsbury Square, nearby the British Museum. The newly renovated building has two big halls, the library, and other premises for organizing receptions and various cultural events. According to the members of the council of trustees, the centre is planning to organize seminars, concerts, film shows, and the evening Russian language courses. The members of the council of trustees hope for receive financing backing from Russian businessmen and private citizens. Leasing premises will be additional financing of centre's activities. Resuming Pushkin House activities was hailed, on behalf of the Russian government, by the Russian Embassy in London. Meanwhile, Russia and Great Britain are planning to sign an agreement on cultural centres that could provide reasoning for British Council, which is already functioning in Russia, and for opening Russia's cultural centre in Great Britain. At the same time, the Russian Ambassador Yuri Fedotov emphasized specially that the future centre would not compete with Pushkin House. 'We are not going to create an alternative to Pushkin House and hope for fruitful cooperation between both centres', he said to journalists at the press conference. The first Pushkin House was opened in Notting Hill in London in1950s by the group of Russian immigrants, with Marina Kullman at the head. In cold war years it played a noticeable role as a meeting place for the admirers of Russian language and culture. In 2005, the members of the council of trustees decided to sell the ramshackle building and to buy a new one, more suited to present day needs.
