Yaroslav Courtyard
By a legend, it was this site where Prince Yaroslav erected his palace in the early XI century, considered as the most splendid and magnificent in Europe. Later, this ground accommodated numerous granaries and warehouses driving the lively trade, and the vessels of foreign merchant were mooring at the nearby quays. In the XVII century, Gostiny Dvor was built instead of the Marketplace. The importance of Yaroslav's Courtyard and the Marketplace for the city's life urged the townspeople to embellish it on a regular basis.
Nowadays, it is a most beautiful area in Novgorod: shadeful alleys, lilac shruberry, lawns with the flowerbeds, and a gorgeous panorama of the River Volkhov and Kremlin.
It is a complex of the most valuable architectural monuments of the XII-XVIII centuries: ST. Nicholas Cathedral, the Church of John the Baptist on Opoki, the Assumption Church at the Marketplace, the St.Parasceve Pyatnitsa Church at the Marketplace, the St. George Church at the Marketplace, the Churchof Women Myrrh Bearers, the St. Procopius Church, Gostiny Dvor Ensemble.
