Our Saviour Transfiguration Church at Nereditsa

This world-famous church is the only edifice that has survived ol a small Neredilskiy Monastery; at its grounds, there is a village now.

The church was built by Prince Yaroslav Vladimirovich on the death ot all his children. While the first church erected by a prince (St.Sophia Cathedral) was the largest, this last one turned out to be the smallest.
The lessening ol princes' importance as city rulers was reflected in the construction business too: the last prince's building does not differ Irom the humble temples built by the boyards, merchants, or inhabitants ol a street (as a common stock) at the end of the XII century.

It is one-domed temple ot a cubical type and a modest size. Fresco of the Our Saviour's Transfiguration Church at Nereditsa was made in 1199, and until its destruction, it gave the most precise notion on the principles of Russian temples decoration of this period.

In the course of World War II, the once-grand tresco suite was lost forever; only the expressive pieces of the -Last Judgement-, the images ol saints and martyrs in the sacristy, and several figures in the low part of the altar enable the visitors to recognize its peculiarities.
