Church on Kovalevo

OUR SAVIOUR'S TRANSFIGURATION CHURCH ON KOVALEVO

Built by the order of Novgorod boyard Ontsifor Zhabin; for a long while, was a cathedral church of Spaso-Kovalev Monastery.

It is featured by three vestibules that adjoin the church's main body from three sides. The southern vestibule houses the burial vault ol the boyard family Zhabins, which both the hollowed-out wooden togs used as coffins and the stone tombs are witnessing, found during the excavations.

The church was painted in 1380. The most expressive is the dome-drum fresco and the figures of giant warriors painted at the tower registers ol the walk that symbofrze the era begun with the victory of the Russian at Kulikovo Reld.

In 1941-1944, the temple happened to get into the front line and was ruined; instead of the the splendid wall painting that covered the area of 350 sq.m, the architects found alterwards only about halt million fragments ot crushed stone. Only the perfect skills and titanic work of the restorers breathed the life into the church itself (architect L. Krasnorechyev) and its painting (restorers: the Grekov). The church is open for visitors again. Within the framework of the permanent exhibition, it is possible to see the church interior with the fragments ol frescoes, dimb to the choir gallery, and appreciate the fine proportions of the church.
