Abramtsevo
Originally (from the mid of the 18th century) the estate of the Golovin noble family, Abramtsevo was bought in 1843 by the writer S.T. Aksakov, who made it a significant cultural centre.
Among many famous Russian celebrities who used to visit Aksakov's estate were writers N.V.Gogol and I.S.Turgenev. After Aksakov's death in 1859 Abramtsevo fell into decay, and in 1870 it was bought by Savva Mamontov, the noted Russian manufacturer and patron of arts, who restored the economy and spiritual life of the estate. It was Savva Mamontov who formed the famous Abramtsevo group of painters, actors, and musicians. Among the members of the group were V.A.Serov, M.A.Vrubel, K.A.Korovin, I.E.Repin, and many other great Russian painters. The world-noted stage director Konstantin Stanislavsky and singer Fyodor Shalyapin used to come to Abramtsevo to take part in amateur performances, which laid down the foundation of the Moscow private opera.
A noted attraction of Abramtsevo is The Church of Savior not made by hand built by S.I.Mamontov in 1881-82 in ancient Pskov and Novgorod style.
